Voices from the Dojo

"Nakamura Sensei's approach to traditional techniques is inventive without losing respect for the art."

In some prefectures, the Japanese police are required to hold at least a Shodan (1st dan) black belt in Aikido.

"Nakamura Sensei is one of the most talented and creative Aikido instructors in the art today. Our students in Colorado are always excited when he visits our dojo. Santa Fe is extremely lucky to have such an extraordinary instructor in their community, few instructors embrace the non-violent, harmonious philosophy of Aikido more than he!"

"Aikido is for everyone, I’ve learned. It has something to offer at all levels and for all aspirations. I started later in my life after eight years of chronic back pain and now I’m close to the best shape I’ve ever been in starting my fourth year of training and learning. The beautiful thing about Aikido is that with the right Sensei, it teaches mindfulness as well as physical ability; Kaiju Aikido is a safe, disciplined but relaxed environment to learn in with a cadre of experienced practitioners that are all very good and willing teachers. Nakamura Sensei has curated this space so everyone can learn at their own pace and ability and get exposure to both advanced and introductory techniques, plus creative approaches to the art as well. Kaiju Aikido has removed limits I’d resigned myself to; I can’t imagine not pursuing Aikido knowledge as long as I’m able."

"We found Kaiju Aikido in August 2023, during one of the most pivotal times in our lives. Sensei Joel Nakamura has been both patient and disciplined in his teaching, helping my son improve his body movement while building real skill and confidence.

Over the first year, I watched Christopher truly blossom. As a single mom with limited time, it meant so much that Sensei welcomed me to practice alongside him during kids class. One of our most memorable experiences was attending the Aikido seminar in Boulder, which was incredibly meaningful for both of us.

I cannot imagine our lives without Kaiju Aikido and Sensei's presence. My son has gained not only Aikido skills, but a deeper understanding of himself. We are forever grateful to be part of this community."

"After more than a decade of Aikido practice, I still find myself consistently learning something new in Nakamura Sensei's classes. His approach to traditional techniques is inventive without losing respect for the art. Recently we've been exploring how to incorporate fascia awareness into technique, which has led to some real "aha moments" for me, especially when working with larger partners where efficiency matters more than strength. Most importantly, the dojo has a welcoming, low-key energy where everyone shares an attitude of learning together. Classes are well-structured and safety-conscious, making it a place where students of all levels and backgrounds can thrive. The private student Facebook group is a great bonus too, packed with recordings that extend the learning well beyond the mat."
